Perfumes: A Whiff to Impress

Smelling good is an integral part of your personality and goes a long way in making that first impression.

I, personally love perfumes, love smelling good and also relate people to the particular perfume that they are wearing. Funnily, perfumes also bring back memories to me. A whiff of a certain perfume worn on a particular day in the past takes me back in time and revives memories of that particular event!

A perfume is your personal signature. So it is important to choose a scent that goes with your character and more importantly with your body chemistry. How does one buy the right perfume?

To pick the right perfume, you need to know that perfumes and colognes are made up of many different accords to produce a harmonious scent. Our body chemistry is unique to us, so, the same perfume may smell differently on different people. It will also smell different in the bottle or sprayed on a card, than it will on your skin.

In a perfume there are three set of notes that appear gradually on top of each other.

Top notes

When you spray the perfume on, you get the impression of these notes first. These notes will last for about 10-20 minutes before they evaporate.

Middle notes

These scents appear just before the top notes fade and are usually rounded and soft. The middle notes usually appear a few minutes after application and will last about 3-6 hours on the skin.

Base notes

These scents are heavy and large molecules that evaporate slowly. They emerge late in fragrant compositions and have a rich and deep character. They are also used to give lasting power to the perfume and they can last up to 24 hours on the skin.
